Romania: Europe's Hidden Gem
A Photographic Exploration of Traditional & Medieval Romania
May 25 - June 4, 2025
Overview
Romania is one of the last accessible European countries to remain largely untouched and undiscovered. Join us for nine full days as we explore this fascinating blend of breathtaking castles, rich history, delightful cuisine and stunning natural wonders.
Our adventure begins and ends in Cluj-Napoca, the largest city in the Transylvania region of Romania. From there we’ll journey to the Bucovina region in northern Romania, famous for the tradition of painting Easter eggs and its painted monasteries. We’ll venture next to the Maramures region, the most authentic region of Romania where we’ll photograph the daily life of people and visit the numerous wooden churches spread across the villages, some 300 – 400 years old. You will feel as though we’ve stepped back in time.
From Maramures, we will head to Transylvania, a place known for its rich cultural heritage, medieval towns, fortifications and beautiful architecture. Oh, yes, and Bran Castle of Dracula fame. The last leg of our adventure takes us to Viscri, a charming village in the heart of Transylvania where there is an effort to preserve rural life and the original architecture of the German-Saxons.
Every day will be packed with photographic opportunities, from the locals going about their daily lives to picturesque landscapes to interesting architecture. Master photographer and educator Alan Ross will be by your side the entire way, helping you providing photographic know-how and expertise in a light-hearted and supportive environment. Whatever your style or format, Alan is dedicated to helping you merge your vision, passion and craft to create images that most articulately reflect your experience.
Joining Alan is Daniel Rosca, a Romania photographer and guide who will coordinate all aspects of our adventure, making sure everything runs smoothly and that our itinerary is maximized for the best photographic opportunities.
To offer a more traditional experience and put us closer to the people and the landscape, we will be staying mostly in rural guest houses. Rooms are comfortable and clean and all have private bathrooms.
